The Louisiana Law Enforcement

 Medal of Honor Program

Legislation was enacted in 1997 establishing the Louisiana Law Enforcement Medal of Honor Program to honor Louisiana law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. The Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement is proud to have been selected to administer this program. The LCLE annually honors the officers' supreme sacrifice on the part of a grateful state, and in the hope that their memories will live on forever in our hearts.

Since its inception, over fifty (50) Louisiana law enforcement officers have been awarded the Medal of Honor after losing their lives in the line of duty. The 2007 ceremony held in New Orleans, Louisiana honored ten  additional Louisiana law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2005 and 2006. It should be noted that the 2005 ceremony was cancelled due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita hitting the state in August and September 2005 respectively.

The LCLE monitors the law enforcement community throughout the calendar year, and coordinates the nomination of officers killed in the line of duty. Each officer's family is invited to attend the ceremony at the expense of the LCLE, and is presented the Medal of Honor,  commemorative plaques, a state flag, a framed photo of the deceased officer, and a personalized candle that is used during the ceremony. The mandate given the LCLE for the administration of the Medal of Honor program is unfunded, and the LCLE must solicit contributions from corporations and individuals in order for the program to be a success.
